Q1.I have been learning Chinese for the past six months and I plan to attend a Mandarin program in Taiwan this Summer. I learned that you have the largest Mandarin center in Taiwan, could you give me more information on your available courses?

A : We are a degree-offering program and have courses for undergraduate and graduate studies in TCSL; we do not offer language learning courses. However, the university has an affiliated language center, which is the largest in Taiwan. The center is called CCLC (Center of Chinese Language and Culture), formerly known as the Mandarin Training Center (MTC). You may contact them for course information. Their official site and e-mail contact arehttp://www.ntnu.edu.tw/mtc/index.htme-mail address : mtc@mtc.ntnu.edu.tw

Q2.I am interested in your program and noticed on your website that your program offers internship abroad. Could you give me more details about this internship program?

A : Thank you for your interests in our program. One of our program objectives is to train top-notch Chinese language instructors, as such, teaching experience is an indispensable part of our curriculum. Our Master’s students are required to complete 100 hours (over the span of seven weeks or more) of internship before they graduate. In addition to the many Mandarin centers in Taiwan where students can complete their student teaching requirement, we also do our best to arrange overseas internship opportunities for students. You may find more details of these overseas internships in the Overseas Internship Program, however, these internships are only available to our students.

Q3.I am a college junior and would like to apply to your graduate program next year. How should I prepare myself for the exams? What subjects are being tested? Is there a reading list I can refer to? What are some of your research directions?

A : You may find information on admission exam under our admission page. We have a complete list of exam subjects, past exams and reading list. Admission procedures are posted by Academic Affairs each year; please refer to their official announcement. You may find the area of expertise and research focus of each professor under the “Research” section of our website, as well as abstracts to students’ thesis. You are also welcome to stop by our department and meet our students; we would be very glad to answer any questions you might have.

Q4.I am new to the field of Chinese language teaching and have come to realize that I am lacking in many ways of my instructional skills, whether it be professional knowledge in linguistics or in instructional resources. Does our program offer any teacher’s training? Thank you.

A : Yes, we do. In addition to degree programs, we also have teacher’s training courses. Please visit http://ntnutcslcttp.wordpress.com/ for more information.。

Q5.I am considering applying to a graduate program in TCSL. Are there any other universities in Taiwan other than NTNU that also have similar programs? Thank you.

A : We are the first in Taiwan to offer Master’s degree program in TCSL. National Kaohsiung Normal University established their TCSL graduate program in 2003. NTU, NTHU, NCCU offer Master’s program in linguistics. Some foreign language departments such as NTNU English Department and NTHU Foreign Language Department also have language teaching discipline. You may look for these related disciplines under our “Online Resources\Related Links”.

Q6.Do you provide “home stay” or “language exchange” services to international students? How do I participate in such services?

A : Our department is an instructional and research unit in TCSL. Though we have international students enrollment, we do not provide home stay or language exchange services. The university occasionally have home stay families for exchange students from sister schools. For further information, please contact NTNU administration or International Affairs.
